Commercially issued postcards depicting various aspects of Vietnam at the turn of the 20th century, when the country was known
as French Indochina. General areas represented are the French Protectorate of Tonkin and the French Protectorate of Annam,
with an emphasis on the cities of Hanoi and Hué. Other locations represented include Caobang, Dap-Cau, Dong-Dang, Laokay,
Nam-Ding and Ninh-Binh. Primary subjects are regional inhabitants, chiefly those representing various trades, social roles
or ethnic types -- e.g. child musicians, palanquin bearers, street vendors, cooks, rickshaw drivers, paper makers, painters,
soldiers, families, various individuals and groups posing in traditional attire, laborers ("coolies"), Mandarins (bureaucrats),
prisoners, etc. Two notable figures include Kinh Luoc Hoang Kao-Kai, Viceroy of Tonkin, and a young unnamed "Empereur d'Annam".
Also documented in the images are street scenes, architecture and a few landscapes of various locations

Pierre Dieulefils (1862-1937), who first arrived in Tonkin as a soldier in 1885, is considered the first professional photographer
to be based in Hanoi. He documented the region including Tonkin, Annam, Cochinchina, Yunnan and Combodia.
